2002 AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS and results
The 2002 Australian Championships are posted on a very nice site with photos, game details and much information about casting games in Australia and the people who play them. Please give them a look. You'll be glad you did.
2002 NATIONALS RETURN TO CHICAGO'S HISTORIC LINCOLN PARK CASTING PIER The resurgent CHICAGO ANGLING AND CASTING CLUB is planning a monumental revival of world class casting games action in Chicago this July 29 -August 3, 2002 with casters from several countries and continents participating. The casting pier is smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood of cultural institutions and fancy hotels etc. blessed by the cool breezes of Lake Michigan. See the Club site for details.
NEW AUSTRALIAN SALTWATER CASTING GAME We are including this verbatim copy of the rules for a couple of new saltwater type casting games . The rules are here in their full glory including plugs for the promoters because this shows a continuing trend toward the introduction of casting games as a part of the fly fishing experience and also because one of the games in particular is a nice little combination accuracy and distance game with a details that we have not seen before. Your old web slave is not going to introduce commercials but people who take the trouble to include casting games in their ventures deserve to be linked with their games.
I have asked for the winners and scores from last year and hope to get that information for this year as well. You will note there is quite a range of equipment. Two of the events describe the limitations of the contestant's rod and line, up to 10/11 rod etc. and the third event requires the use of a 2 weight rod and line supplied by the sponsor. Practicing distance with a light rod is quite effective. It emphasizes technique and translates directly into improved performance with heavier equipment. It is interesting to compare these rules with the rules of the ISE show five weight distance contests which are shown below the ISE Salt Lake City final results lower down in this page.
Quintrex International Saltwater Flyfishing Expo Sunshine Coast, Queensland Australia
AUSTRALIAN SALTWATER FLYCASTING TITLES THE RULES The Australian Saltwater Flycasting Titles is a tournament that is establishing a basis for flycasting competition based on saltwater flyfishing. In 2001 an initial competition was conducted after which it was decided to run an event that offered flycasters another opportunity to pit their casting skills against others. The event is not designed to compete with other competitions such as run by the Australian Flycasting Federation but provide an additional opportunity to build skills and friendships within the flyfishing fraternity. The titles are run in conjunction with the Quintrex International Saltwater Flyfishing Expo over the weekend 20/21 April 2002 which will be located with the new Sunshine Coast Boating and Fishing Expo on Queenslands Sunshine Coast. The following guidelines and rules will apply:
Equipment Allowed Saltwater Distance o Any rod 10wt or under no longer than 10 ft (10/11 are allowed but not straight 11 wt) o Shooting Head no longer than 50 ft or full length line not shorter than 30 metreso Running line to be no thinner than .050mm or recognizable braided line eg Cortland 3M Airflo etc (no low diameter trick lines)o Stripping baskets are allowedo Only the pre-tied leader and simulated fly supplied by the organizers is allowed (this is not to be shortened or lengthened)
Saltwater Flycasting o Any rod 10wt or under no longer than 10 ft (10/11 are allowed but not straight 11 wt) o Line should be maximum 10 wt full length floating line (may be lengthened with recognized running line as specified in the distance casting event). Floating line no less than 90 ft uncuto Stripping baskets are allowedo Only the pre-tied leader and simulated fly supplied by the organizers is allowed (this is not to be shortened or lengthened)The Talon Aurora Leveler Only supplied equipment is to be used Types of Competition
o Saltwater Distance straight distance event, rules as follows:
o Casters must remain behind the casting line at all times, any foot over the line disqualifies the cast with no alternate cast permitted (ie only 6 casts allowed)o No height assistance ie platforms allowedo Six casts are allowed over 5 minutes. The score is the combination of two longest casts (ie 120.4 metres = 120.4 points)
o Saltwater Flycasting two distance casts and six accuracy casts in five minutes as follows:
o Casters must remain within the casting circle at all times, any foot over the line disqualifies the cast with no alternate cast permitted (ie only 14 casts allowed)o No height assistance ie platforms allowedo Two distance casts and then 12 accuracy casts are to be made to 6 circular rings with two casts only per ring. Bulls eyes score 10 while within the circle but outside the bulls eye 5 points. There are to be no practice casts. False casting is allowed but when the fly is laid on the ground it will count as a cast. Any additional cast at a circle disqualifies any score on that circle.o The score is the based on one point per metre of the longest cast made of the two distance castso 12 casts are to be made at the accuracy circles starting at number one and rotating clockwise only
Categories o Open Men o Open Womeno Junior (15yrs and under)Entry Fee A standard entry fee of $10.00 applies. Juniors (15 years 0 mths and under) free. Entrants should be aware that the Sunshine Coast Boating & Fishing Expo organisers have a $5 per adult (children under 16 free) entry charge, This entry allows entry to all activities of the Quintrex International Saltwater Flyfishing Expo. A competitors tag will be supplied to those entering the competition which must be produced for all points registration. Prizes There are trophies awarded for individual events and the overall champion will win a trophy and have their name entered on the perpetual trophy. The Talon Aurora 2w Leveller
The Concept As the name implies, this component of the Australian Saltwater Flycasting Titles is designed to provide an opportunity for casters to apply their skills using equipment that will common to all competitors and perhaps a little out of the range that a saltwater flyfisher would use. The key will be application of casting skill. The Equipment Supplied
_____________________________________________________________ Rules: There are two groups - Open Mens and Open Ladies The same rod/reel/line will be used by all (in each group so it is completely fair to all entrants.) One cast only is allowed which ends when the fly line touches the ground at any time in front of the caster (as determined by the judges) As many false casts may be made as the caster requires. Distance is measured from a start line, the casters foot or any part there-of over the line means automatic disqualification. No second attempt is permitted. The longest cast wins In the event of a matching distance, a cast off will be run with the first longest distance of the set winning. The longest cast will be marked on the ground from casting point to fly There will be no practice allowed. Sponsors We wish to thank the following sponsors for supporting the titles: Quintrex, Caloundra City, Peter Hayes Fly casting Particular thanks goes to Talon Aurora Australia for introducing the Talon Aurora Leveler for which there will be some great prizes.

INTERNATIONAL SPORTSMAN'S EXPOSITION CASTING SCORES
March 17, 2002 Salt Lake City finals This is an e mail from Graham Anderson of Calgary, Alberta, Canada ,describing some of the events at the ISE finals in Calgary. He went to Salt Lake to see the casting and to compete. He cast 108'10" to Lance Egan's 109' in the qualifying contest so - no drift boat for Graham. "Bill, Later Graham remarked about the winning cast: "I'd like to tell something about Jim's winning cast. He made a couple false casts and decided to start over. With the line laying behind him on the carpet, he nonchalantly tossed the line ahead to get started. Tossed one backcast (must have been with a shoot) and casually looking, turned the forward cast loose out to 111'3" to win a driftboat. Any non-caster seeing this would never believe people have to practice for months and years to be able to do this. Looked like something you could teach anyone to do in 5 minutes. You will be surprised at how easy it looked when you see the tape. "
2002 The ISE shows in Los Angeles, Sacramento, Denver, San Mateo, Pleasanton, Phoenix and Salt Lake City will yield prizes of a drift boat for the man and woman winners of the five weight fly rod distance casting contest at the Salt Lake City finals. The rules have been refined so that this year all the contestants will use the same two outfits. Some of the events are out doors and some indoors so the scores are not strictly comparable. The wind and random air currents can be a plus or minus. Here are the scores to date. Los Angeles: Men: Ian Walker, 119'; Women, Barbara Pentoney, 65', Youth, Kevin Lentz, 43'2". Sacramento: Men: Floyd Dean, 98' ; Denver: Men: Brian O'Keefe, 112'11"; Women: Joey Waltemoth, 51'.Youth: 1. Christopher Yoshimura, 13, 58'3"; 2nd. Edward Wyka, 9, 33'8"; 3rd. Cody Swingle, 8, 25'9". San Mateo: Men: Tim Rajeff, 108'; Jerry Siem, 106'; Robert Meizeweinkle, 105'; Women: Wendy Gunn, 82'; Rachel Connery, 72'; Rhea Topping, 68'. Youth: George (Andreevitch?)13, 73', 3rd. Dusty (A ndreevitch?) 9, 58'. Pleasanton: Men: Josh Frazier, 80' 4"; John Rickard, 72'6"; Fred Contaui, 70'1". Youth: Paul Martin, 11, 57'8", Will Fleenor, 13, 51'5". The finals are at Salt Lake City, March 17.
"THE FLY FISHING SHOW" Sage casting contests " TheFLY FISHING SHOW, an eastern fly fishing show juggernaut, is featuring a Sage accuracy/distance contest at all their seven shows, five in the east. The distance is a doozy. The cast has to go between two uprights, four feet apart at 65 feet. I guess that is the accuracy part. George and Dusty, the two youngsters mentioned in the San Mateo ISE show results above, showed up at The Fly Fishing Show in San Rafael, CA and fouled things up for the adults. George, aged 13, cast 73 feet in the finals to tie an adult who happened to be an FFF certified instructor and Dusty, 9, came in third. George lost the cast off to the adult. First prize was a Sage rod, second prize a Sage reel and third prize a fly line so I guess the kids are hooked on casting games.

Results of distance and accuracy events at the Washington Council, FFF Fly Casting Exposition, September 29, 2001 at Trophy Lakes Golf and Casting Club, Port Orchard, Washington.
For starters, there was a fishing contest in the Golf Club's stocked ponds with each contestant given a half hour to catch as many inches of fish as possible. The winners were: First, with 89 inches of trout, Richard Embry; Second, with 87.75 inches, Deene Almvig. This was a fund raising extravaganza and the feature of the casting contest was pledges of so much a foot for the longest of the three distance casts of each competitor. All the casting was outdoors with nine foot six weight rods and weight forward floating lines. The winner of the Professional division pledge contest was Jimmy LeMert with pledges of $1,235.00. Second was Richard Embry with pledges of $815.00. Trout Fly Accuracy: This game was played with five thirty inch targets at 20 or so to 50 feet with the first round unlimited false casting and the second round unlimited false casting to the first, nearest, target and then only one false cast for the next four targets with five points awarded for each of the ten targets hit. The winner of the San Mateo men's was giving a casting demonstration on the pond earlier in the week and, just for fun, asked a spectator standing a few feet beyond the end of the pond to hold up his arms as goal posts whereupon he cast the leader between the arms - This should be worth more than three points for a field goal shouldn't it? The spectator was about ninety feet out. Just goes to show you what working on your back cast can do for your casting game.
