AMERICAN CASTING ASSOCIATION

Press Release

May 9th, 2011

The *ACA (American Casting Association) is excited to announce Introduction to Tournament Casting to be held this July 9th and 10th at the Cabela’s Store in East Hartford Connecticut.

Top ACA casters such as Steve Rajeff, World Casting Champion, will provide demonstrations of competitive events and engage in some actual competitions over the weekend on the ponds and lawn. Steve is also the Senior Rod Designer of G. Loomis Fishing Tackle. Tournament casting is a fun way to learn, practice and share fishing presentation techniques, from beginner to expert. The schedule and directions are on the last page of this release.

Casters and spectators are invited to cast or watch. This Cabela’s store has graciously offered to provide a grandstand to accommodate spectators. The events will include accuracy and distance events with plug and fly tackle, to include all participants’ interests. The morning’s programs will be repeated in the afternoons so more people can participate and watch.

This event would not be possible without the help of Diane Bazzano, Event Coordinator- Cabela’s East Hartford and Cary Greene, Fishing Department Manager.

The ACA would also like to thank the CFFA Association) for providing manpower and assistance for this event. CFFA president Bruce Rich says he’s excited for his members to experience this event.

HENRY'S FORK FOUNDATION 'S HENRY'S FORK DAY FUND RAISER features a casting competition sponsored by Braide Sessions of  HTTP://WWW.FLYCASTINGCHAMPIONSHIPS.COM

This contest is part of  Henry's Fork Day XVII, on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at Fisherman's Access, Last Chance Idaho. Henry's Fork Foundation,

http://www.henrysfork.org/?q=node/167  , is having a full day from breakfast to the casting competition, the annual meeting, a 4:00 silent auction, 6:00 dinner meeting, 6:45 PM live auction, 8:30 PM HFF awards and 8:45 PM drawing for a Clackacraft drift boat.

Braide Sessions is the founder of http://www.flycastingchampionships.com, a prize money casting contest circuit which he is starting in various places around the West. It is patterned after the golf circuits.

TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP: There will be two person teams entering at a cost of $40.00 per team. Any individual can enter as many times as that person likes but only once with the same partner. After the qualifying round, the five  top teams will be auctioned off in what I presume is a Calcutta type auction and compete again for the team championship. The Prize pool, composed of the team entry fees and the Calcutta auction proceeds  will be split- 50% to the Henry's Fork Foundation and 50% to the winning bidder and team with the prize divided one third each to the bidder and the two team members.

INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Qualifying times, June 17th, Friday, 7-10 AM and 7 PM to dark at the Henry's Fork Anglers shop.

Saturday, June 18th  8:00 AM to 5:30 PM  at the Henry's Fork Foundation Day Tent at the Fisherman's Access to the Henry's Fork.

No 5 and 6 casters will compete for the Best of the Henry's Fork amateur division, (Prizes Simms gear bag and fly line)

Nos. 2,3 & 4 castes will compete with each other. (Prizes- fly line, leaders and tippets)

ANOTHER  PRIZE MONEY CASTING GAME

The  TED TRUEBLOOD CHAPTER OF TROUT UNLIMITED, BOISE ID.  http://www.tedtruebloodtu.org/flycasting   is continuing the fly casting golf tournament trail tradition of  the Bend Oregon chapter with it's Saturday, May 14, 2011 cash prize golf game at Eagle Island State Park, near Boise. This is a fund raiser for a local  game fish conservation project  with $3,000.00 in prize money on a 12-14 hole course to be laid out and posted on the Internet by March 31. There will be a $500.00 entry fee for each four person team, limited to 30  teams in two skill level divisions. A "Casting for Fun" contest for $25.00 a pop  spectators  follows  the money game and, true to time honored tradition for getting a big entry there will be lunch for all entrants.  (Do you suppose anyone will wear plaid pants on the course?) (do the fish care?)

Fly Casting Forum has a policy of posting the top three and ties in any casting contest we can track down so be sure to bring your dark glasses and alias if you want to play anonymously.  (Or bring a bunch of buddies)

BULLETIN: There is  a new prize money fly casting competition series which had it's first tournament in Rexburg Idaho January 22, 2011. The tournament sponsor has a very instructive website FLY CASTING CHAMPIONSHIPS . The URL is http://flycastingchampionships.com.  This site describes a series of  prize money casting contests, with classes defined  by the participants average long cast with a six weight rod and a six  weight floating line. There is an entry fee and part of the entry fee goes into the prize pool. A contestant can enter more than once in the same contest and have more than one chance to s core, thus taking much of the tension out of this casting game, which is patterned after the American Casting Association "Five Weight Game. The Five Weight Game has eight casts to targets, with an obstacle guarding some targets, followed by two long casts for distance. The combined score from accuracy and distance determines the final score.

There were contests in Ogden Utah February 11 - 13 and  Bozeman Montana, February 18-20. These contests will be followed on the Fly Casting Tournament and Contest News pages of  this website, linked below.

Other contests around the country will be announced as arrangements are finalized. The format of the contest circuit resembles the professional golf tournament schedule and prize money from sponsors is in the offing

Fly Casting Forum moved  to " WWW.FLYCASTINGFORUM.NET on March 15, 2010.

We have our very own domain name and will continue to respond to mail at slowsnap@att.net until further notice, if not forever. On this permanent site we will flex what's left of our brain muscles and have pictures and maybe some videos as well.  The reason Fly Casting Forum has placed so high in the Google world is because of the number of people who link to us. We hope they will find it pleasing to link to the new site so that we will be near the top of  the fly casting and fly fishing searches. ATT  Worldnet discontinued their web hosting service as of March 31 so we now have our own permanent home for the duration.  There are a number of very informative fly casting and fly fishing sites now and we hope to play in their league.

TROUT UNLIMITED ORVIS

2ND ANNUAL NORTH AMERICAN FLY CASTING TOURNAMENT

BEND OREGON

August 13, 14, 15, 2010

Partners Orvis and Deschutes Chapter 522, Trout Unlimited North American Fly Casting Championships took place at the Bend Oregon Fly Casting Golf course at the Old Mill shopping mall on the banks of  the Deschutes River in Bend. The course, the first permanently installed fly casting golf in the United States (or the world) is 18 holes of challenging and fun casting situations which hone the fly fisher's skills and provide realistic duplications of  classic fly fishing scenarios - complete with curious cruising large trout from time to time, particularly under the bridges on the course.

The first hole is  a five weight cast from the Orvis store and continues past restaurants, bars (horrors) and shops for about a mile circuit along both sides of the world renowned Deschutes river with hole 18 a five weight cast from the very same Orvis store. (what a  coincidence) Fly fishers share the river with boaters, innertubers and, in the summer, a bountiful hatch of bikinis on warm days. (the world is waiting for a bikini fly pattern)

Each hole has three tasks for par graduated for three skill levels but all addressing the same casting problem.

      • Target 5 – 60 – 80 ft. (Bonus Target)

    Play

    • Casters must stand within the designated casting box.
    • Preparation time. One minute (60-seconds) of preparation time starts when the judge has called the caster and declared the casting box “open.” Casters should use this time to strip line from the reel and arrange it on the stage area.
    • Caster Ready. Casters will begin by standing in the box with fly in-hand and not more that 2 ft of line extending from rod. Loose line cannot be held in any way that would indicate distance to the target.
    • Casting Time. Only qualifying casts executed with three (3) minutes of the judge’s announcement of “Start” will be scored. There will be no time out for any reason, except for outside interference as determined by the judge.
    • Target Order: After meeting the initial conditions, the caster shall cast a total of eight final forward casts in the following order:
      • Cast 1              Target 1
      • Cast 2              Target 3
      • Cast 3              Target 4
      • Cast 4              Target 1
      • Cast 5              Target 2 (Obstacle Target)
      • Cast 6              Target 3
      • Cast 7              Target 4
      • Cast 8              Target 5 (Bonus Target)
    • Targets must be executed in order.
    • ISE_BOTW_Casting_order

    Scoring

    • Points will be awarded for accurately casting to each target.
      • Inner Circle – 500 pts
      • Outer Circle – 300 pts
      • Outside outer ring – 100 pts.
    • The total score will be the sum of the points achieved on all targets, minus the sum of all assessed penalties.

    Penalties

    • Penalties are assessed towards the score on the next target at which the caster is supposed to cast. Multiple penalties may be assessed as appropriate. The sum of all such penalties shall be limited to the score achieved at that target. The penalties are:
      • Tick – Should the line extended beyond the rod tip, the leader, or the fly strike the casting surface in front of the casting box or any target when no final forward cast was performed, it shall be scored a tick. The penalty for a tick shall count during the entire casting time, whether caster is in or out of casting box and whether or not the fly is on. The penalty for each tick shall be 10% of the score achieved on the next target.
      • Obstacle target – The objective when casting at the obstacle target is to have the line and leader settle without crossing any part of the first target – the obstacle. In case the caster fails to meet that objective, the following penalties are assessed: 400 points if the settled line or leader crosses the inner ring of the first target, 200 points if the settled line or leader crosses the outer ring the outer ring, but not the inner ring, of the first target.
      • Out-of-the-box – A penalty equal to the entire score achieved on the target shall  be assessed if the caster performs a final forward cast without being in the box
      • Illegal strip – A penalty equal to the entire score achieved on the next target shall be assessed if the caster measures line along the rod.
      • Early retrieve – A penalty equal to the entire score achieved on the target shall be assessed if the caster lifts the fly off the casting surface after making a final forward cast before the judge calls “score.”
      • Lost fly – No penalty shall be assessed for the loss of a fly or for a lost fly falling onto the casting surface. A lost or attached fly may be replaced at any time with a fly approved by the judge.

2011 Best of the West Accuracy Flycasting Tournament Results

ISE  TEAMS SKINS GAME AT SOME OF  THE INTERNATIONAL SPORTSMAN'S EXPOSITION SHOWS IN THE WEST.

This is comparable to the Skins Game played at the 2010 Bend Oregon, Trout Unlimited - Orvis fly casting golf  extravaganza, discussed up page from this entry  - except for more money  to enter and to win. The Orvis -  TU game is in a golf like context and this game is closer to the five weight game. Both games are fast movers and an entertaining challenge for the fly fisher jaded by too many eight pound trout  trying to destroy his old fly rod friend.

2010 Fly-Skins Team Casting Challenge

Contest available at these 2010 ISE sportsman shows:

Returning for the 2010 ISE season is the 2010 Fly-Skins Team Casting Challenge.

The challenge will be featured at ISE Denver and ISE San Mateo. It is a fly casting contest based on the golf game named "skins". In the game teams test their accuracy-casting skills to win prizes and cash. This contest was designed to be a fast-paced, audience friendly competition where the finest talents in fly-casting can be rewarded for their skills. The team concept, with an emphasis on corporate sponsorships, is highlighted through the use of team uniforms, which elevates the image and atmosphere of the game.

Team Exofficio: Steve Parrott, Sandi Roberts, Clay Roberts Team Oakley: Jeff Wagner, Kat Wagner, Frank Smethurst
Team Sage: Mike Bostwick, Kati Reid, Zack Dalton Team Scientific Anglers: Charles Card, Lori Nicholson, Lance Egan

In a hard-fought battle last season, four teams competed in fast-paced action. In the end Team Exofficio split $900, Team Oakley landed $300, Team Scientific Anglers earned $400 leaving Team Sage longing for a re-match. Click here for complete 2009 Fly-Skins Results. The contest will be hosted by  Brian O'Keefe, longtime competitive caster and host of ISE's flyfishing theaters.

Contest Overview
The 3-person teams will cast at each of the targets, attempting to score the maximum number of points. All teams will cast to the same target in a round. As in skins, each target will have a prize value. If a team outscores all other teams on that round, they will be awarded that prize. If at least one other team ties that score, the prize money is added to the next target’s prize. In this “one-tie, all-tie” format, all teams will cast to the next target, hoping to capture the increased prize.

Up to $1,800 in Cash Prize Money

The targets will have the following values.

Target 1 $400
Target 2 $400
Target 3 $500
Target 4 $500

FIVE WEIGHT GAME

The American Casting Association Five Weight Game is being played around the country these days. Here are a few scores and some comments.

Two concentric rings 30 and 54 inches in diameter describes  the five targets used and there are eight scoring casts to them. Absent penalties, the caster gets 100 points minimum for each target with 300 points for getting into the 54 incher and 500 points for the 30 incher. The minimum accuracy score is 800 - 100 points per target and the maximum is 4000, 500 points per target.  The distance score is ten times the total of the two longest distance casts.

Target distances range from twenty feet to eighty feet though I have never seen an eighty footer in a game.  Generally  - seventy feet  down to sixty feet for the long one. The second target requires a curve cast to avoid draping the line on the first target which is touching the second target on a direct line to the center of the casting box. Some casters settle for 300 by casting straight to the edge of the 54 inch ring while keeping one foot inside the 4 foot casting box and streeeeetching out.  The curve is more fun. I have never even wanted to cast a curve to a fish but it is fun to play with the curve. It is all about touch and feeling the line.

Some comments:  The  ACA rules require a weight forward floating line with a belly between  35 and 42 feet and specific weight limits as well as a minimum length of 88 feet. . The Washington FFF supplies and requires competitors to use  the SA XXD which has 63 feet of belly and 105 feet of length.  The longer and heavier belly is an  advantage for distance and may approach  the efficiency of  an 85 foot double taper which will cast a straighter and more composed loop than any weight forward line. Many competent casters feel that an eighty-five foot double taper is a better distance weapon than a weight forward because it allows a  better and more sweetly controlled line profile and gets into really small running line at 85 feet rather than the 105 floating line feet  of traditional weight forwards. There is a recent casting book, published in 2009, whose prominant author maintains that an effective double haul cannot accomplished with a double taper line- only with a weight forward .  I would beg to differ with him. The double taper is an advantage in shooting the sixty to eighty foot bonus target with unlimited false casts. It does pay to lubricate the line, more so with the double taper than the weight forward. A freshly dressed double taper is a sweet casting thing and doesn't pick up algae etc. as much as a dirty or rough line.  I noticed that several of  the big boys at Ellensburg were false casting the distance to the bonus target which was a little over sixty feet out. There is always a trade off between false casting a longer line and getting better results with a shorter more composed  false cast and a shoot to the target. A double taper makes this an easier choice.

Another distinction of  the Washington rules, which are  described as being 40 % different from the ACA rules, is the Washington requirement that the line be stripped off the reel only while the contestant is "casting". The better part of valor would seem to be to strip it all out while casting twenty feet backwards and then arranging  the line in a suitable way for the longer casts without stepping out of the casting box. There is a 100 point penalty for stepping out of the casting box.

The tick penalties are more understandable by Washington rules - 100 points - rather than 10% of an unknown  future score. The prudent caster will false cast quite a bit higher over grass than water due to the greater uncertainty of  detecting ticks on grass compared to the clearly visible tick on water. Since there can be a tick penalty when the fly has been lost it is important for the caster to be sure of the presence of the fly and stop false casting when there is any inkling that the fly may have been lost.

The five weight game is an entertaining practice of multiple aspects of fly fishing. It goes quickly and packs a variety of casting skills into one package. If there were to be a single game the five weight game would be right up there competing with the trout fly game as a test of all around skill.  It is easy to play on the lawn and easy to practice at home.

ORVIS TROUT UNLIMITED BEND FLY CASTING GOLF GAMES RESULTS

NEW GAME IN TOWN

The Bay area was Johnny On the Spot with representatives at the  NEW GAME IN TOWN  - Fly Casting Golf. Orvis has, in cooperation with the City of Bend, Oregon, inspired (with a substantial cash and inspiration infusion)  the creation of  a permanent outdoor 18 hole fly casting golf game on the banks of the Deschutes River in Bend and, by a great coincidence, roughly one bass bug long target from  the back door of the Bend Orvis shop.   Orvis devoted big bucks to the creation of this gem of a fly casting experience. There is a gallery for some of the holes which lie between the river and restaurant row  but most of  the holes are very private, either  across the river or away from the shopping area. The one big problem is concentration. If you look over the side of the second bridge you cross to complete the course you will frequently see significant sized trout hanging in the shadows away from the birds and other predators.

There were three classes : Amateurs plus Men and Women’s Advanced. Amateurs were people not involved with the industry, prior competitive fly games or instructors or certified instructors. The games were played on September 18, 19 and 20, 2009. the entry fee was twenty five dollars per player, with an included  complementary buffet get together on Friday evening, the 18th, in the Orvis store at  course side. The event was sponsored by Orvis and the DesChutes chapter of  Trout Unlimited. The TU club was integral to the success of  the bash providing officials and assistance in the logistics and care of  the course. ( there were no sand traps to rake)

The course (which has eighteen stations of targets or casting tasks) is scored like 18 holes of golf with a par assigned to each station (hole) and a maximum of  8 added bogey strokes.  A tick  counts as a stroke. The first station (hole) starts beside the Orvis parking lot with some casts to targets sunk into the grass. The  next holes are across the street for  three fancy roll casting holes on a  couple of  ponds. It then rambles up river to a   vertical target to cast through. After that there are casts and curve casts under trees, single or double handed spey type casts in the river  a 150 foot distance hole with an eight inch target for the expert class and a succession of roll, target, distance and off hand casting challenges to the eighteenth hole which is a curve casting situation.   For the heavy hitters one distance hole is over 500 feet long with a tree on the fairway.   One of the fisher people was on hand to compete with his golf cart containing several rods. The caster can use as many rods as desired, up to ten feet in length  and many of the competitors used several rods for different situations.

There are  rules panels at each hole describing  three levels of  difficulty  with a par assigned. The maximum number of bogey strokes is eight over par. The pars run from 2 to ten  and generally are the same for all three levels but with  more difficult requirements for the more experienced  players.

The contest was eleven holes for the advanced   men’s segment and a  lesser number of holes for the other divisions. Casting on the river holes  was not a good idea on a weekend with boaters about so all the casts were on grass or ponds near the river.

Roll casting is a big part of this game and roll casting is a big part of  fishing when you consider the roll cast pickup and  the slick way a roll cast can get the fly out  under or in front of  vegetation or other obstacles.

Par for the eleven hole game was 49 and the first three in the men’s advanced division were Steve Rajeff, 58, Henry Mittel, 62, and  Tim Rajeff.  Floyd Dean was  fourth and Brian O’Keefe was fifth with sixth being decided by a roll casting cast off between  Chase Jablonski, of Spokane, Washington  and Matt Paluch of Moses Lake, Washington. Matt hit the fifty foot target on his second roll cast. ( the rules permitted the caster to overhead cast out to the vicinity of the target) However Matt  put some more chips on the table by  advising Chase that  if  Chase hit the target on his first cast  Matt would jump into the pond.  You guessed it.  Matt got wet. Every camera in the county was trained on him when he hit the  water so who knows  how many people around  the globe know about  Matt and Chase and  fly casting golf by now. Great theater and  Matt was as good as his word.  PICTURES

MORE PICTURES      EVEN MORE PICTURES

Katherine Hart won  the  women’s advanced  with  Lee Ann Ross  second and Peg Van Natter third.

Orvis sprang for some significant prizes. A 12 foot kayak for the amateur winner, $3000  for advanced men’s first and  a $4200 fishing trip for advanced women’s first with significant cash and merchandise prizes for others as well.

Orvis and Trout Unlimited did not invent fly casting golf  but they have certainly thrust it into a serious  side of  the fly fishing life.  We look forward to visiting  Bend to play  the course in the morning and fish the rest of the day. This is the only permanent installation I know of  but the concept can be bundled into a series of holes that are easy to set up on any available and suitable body of water. The site of the Seattle Casting Club in Seattle was turned into a pitch and putt golf  course so it is time for casting to strike back. There are nine hole golf courses and twenty seven hole golf courses. Other casting golf games are projected around the country so it will be interesting to see if this catches on.  There are numerous fishing contests that have a first round of casting competition with  places in the fishing contest as prizes. This Bend golf game is fun and is so varied that everyone can find some part of  it to excel in. One of the holes gave four strokes to hit  a seventy and an eighty foot target. Now that is a challenge.. The rules allowed any number of single hand rods up to ten feet in length with the leader no less than 7 ½ feet, allowing  24 inches of mono butt section before an Orvis 7 ½ foot leader supplied by  Orvis.  No  shooting heads or marked lines allowed but  multicolored factory lines are legal. Lines must be integrated, floating and in their original length.

Mini fly casting golf games can be set up with little expense and effort by local fishing and casting clubs at their meetings or picnics or outings . The games are a hoot because the situations can be varied and handicapped  so that the same people do not win all the time, just like golf. A few years back the American Museum of Fly Fishing had casting golf games at some of it’s banquet-auctions with high end fly rods for prizes. ( Playing the golf medal play game – play to win each hole and count the holes won or lost rather than total score for three,  five, nine or eighteen holes. That is the way the President’s Cup at Harding Park (in San Francisco) was played for one million dollars or some such figure during the 2009 Northwestern. A disastrous hole doesn't boot you out of the running.   And, they are clearly fishing situations – with bushes around etc.- which illustrate the usefulness of learning to hit a target with a controlled stroke. Collapsible targets for judging rings are easy and cheap to make. Inch and a half plastic tubing makes a beautiful target set that can be carried in bags that fit in even a  small car.  Six targets to a bag are about right. A member of the San Jose Club made many sets of gorgeous targets with a home made jig a few years back.
