FLY CASTING FORUM

Fly Casting Forum features news of fly casting and plug casting competition, scores and techniques, fly rod calibration and evaluation data, multi-sensory fly casting teaching programs, history of the sport and the people who have nurtured it through the years, discussions, questions and comments concerning fly casting techniques and ways to make our times alone with the water and our fly rod more memorable and satisfying. Anyone who shares our approach to fly rodding as an art and a dance with the line is invited to follow this page and submit responses to our features. We welcome comment and inquiry.

Make a friend of your fly rod as you make a friend of  your child - Play games with it.

My fly rod is my fishing friend and makes my day brighter whether the fish cooperate or not.

Remember: "Casting games are the fly fisher's driving range."  Chris Korich

Casting versus Fishing

The other day someone remarked to me that I like casting whereas this person likes fishing. I responded that I like fishing and casting. Casting with my friend, my fly rod, makes fishing fun every time. The tournament fly casters I know are also avid fishers and spend much time on the water with their fishing friends – their fly rods. Practicing together makes your rod your buddy. The reason fishing is so much more fun with a well trained fly rod is because the cast itself is a reward – just as hitting a target is an elemental reward, a competent cast to the place where a fish could be is a reward. This turns fishing situations with bushes, overhanging trees, underwater structure etc. into pleasure opportunities. You become a student of your back cast, your roll cast and all the other little tricks you develop. Every situation offers a reward. To have fished the water well is a worthy goal. The catching is certainly a bonus but it is in our power as dedicated fly fishers to leave every body of water, whether still or moving, knowing that we have fished the water well. That makes any fishing trip worth while. Why let the fish decide whether we have had a good time.                                                                              Peg

Many people want to cast well enough to fish effectively but we are reaching out to people intending to master the rod and line so they can enjoy the sensation of casting a fully controlled loop to a particular spot, be it near or far far away, with such aplomb and savoire faire that the cast itself is a sufficient reward. This cannot be accomplished without serious practice and attention to the theory of making the fly rod move the line. We want to encourage others to become fly casting hobbyists, like us, in addition to their fishing hobby and to cast where they look, under the wind, into the wind, under the bush, back handed, over the off shoulder or clear out of sight.

AMERICAN CASTING ASSOCIATION

Press Release

May 9th, 2011

The *ACA (American Casting Association) is excited to announce Introduction

to Tournament Casting to be held this July 9th and 10th at the Cabela’s Store in

East Hartford Connecticut. Top ACA casters such as Steve Rajeff, World Casting

Champion will provide demonstrations of competitive events and engage in some

actual competitions over the weekend on the ponds and lawn. Steve is also the

Senior Rod Designer of G. Loomis Fishing Tackle. Tournament casting is a fun

way to learn, practice and share fishing presentation techniques, from beginner

to expert. The schedule and directions are on the last page of this release.

Casters and spectators are invited to cast or watch. This Cabela’s store has

graciously offered to provide a grandstand to accommodate spectators. The

events will include accuracy and distance events with plug and fly tackle, to

include all participants’ interests. The morning’s programs will be repeated in the

afternoons so more people can participate and watch.

This event would not be possible without the help of Diane Bazzano, Event

Coordinator- Cabela’s East Hartford and Cary Greene, Fishing Department

Manager.

The ACA would also like to thank the CFFA (Connecticut Fly Fisherman’s

Association) for providing manpower and assistance for this event. CFFA

president Bruce Rich says he’s excited for his members to experience this event.

STILL ANOTHER PRIZE MONEY GAME

HENRY'S FORK FOUNDATION 'S HENRY'S FORK DAY FUND RAISER features a casting competition sponsored by Braide Sessions of  HTTP://WWW.FLYCASTINGCHAMPIONSHIPS.COM

This contest is part of  Henry's Fork Day XVII, on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at Fisherman's Access, Last Chance Idaho. Henry's Fork Foundation,

http://www.henrysfork.org/?q=node/167  , is having a full day from breakfast to the casting competition, the annual meeting, a 4:00 silent auction, 6:00 dinner meeting, 6:45 PM live auction, 8:30 PM HFF awards and 8:45 PM drawing for a Clackacraft drift boat.

Braide Sessions is the founder of http://www.flycastingchampionships.com, a prize money casting contest circuit which he is starting in various places around the West. It is patterned after the golf circuits.

TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP: There will be two person teams entering at a cost of $40.00 per team. Any individual can enter as many times as that person likes but only once with the same partner. After the qualifying round, the five  top teams will be auctioned off in what I presume is a Calcutta type auction and compete again for the team championship. The Prize pool, composed of the team entry fees and the Calcutta auction proceeds  will be split- 50% to the Henry's Fork Foundation and 50% to the winning bidder and team with the prize divided one third each to the bidder and the two team members.

INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Qualifying times, June 17th, Friday, 7-10 AM and 7 PM to dark at the Henry's Fork Anglers shop.

Saturday, June 18th  8:00 AM to 5:30 PM  at the Henry's Fork Foundation Day Tent at the Fisherman's Access to the Henry's Fork.

ANOTHER  PRIZE MONEY CASTING GAME

The  TED TRUEBLOOD CHAPTER OF TROUT UNLIMITED, BOISE ID.  http://www.tedtruebloodtu.org/flycasting   is continuing the fly casting golf tournament trail tradition of  the Bend Oregon chapter with it's Saturday, May 14, 2011 cash prize golf game at Eagle Island State Park, near Boise. This is a fund raiser for a local  game fish conservation project  with $3,000.00 in prize money on a 12-14 hole course to be laid out and posted on the Internet by March 31. There will be a $500.00 entry fee for each four person team, limited to 30  teams in two skill level divisions. A "Casting for Fun" contest for $25.00 a pop  spectators  follows  the money game and, true to time honored tradition for getting a big entry there will be lunch for all entrants.  (Do you suppose anyone will wear plaid pants on the course?) (do the fish care?)

Fly Casting Forum has a policy of posting the top three and ties in any casting contest we can track down so be sure to bring your dark glasses and alias if you want to play anonymously.  (Or bring a bunch of buddies and play as a team)  The various holes require distance on a few, roll casts on a few and general cunningness on all of them, just like working the shoreline of any lake or stream from a boat or the beach.

The costs of  playing the games are peanuts compared to the cost of traveling to a renowned fly fishing water and learning that "you should have been here last week")  You will have fun with your fly rod and fly castomg  smarts at every contest. not just the crowded fishing destinations with weather and fish population issues. One of the best things about casting games is the way your focus  gets sharpened with every event. The beauty of the golf format is that the heeby jeebies go away  after the first or second hole and you are all business and enjoying the challenge and successes that can  come with each hole. It is just like spotting a rise or a shadow or outline of a fish or a sure fire fish lie in the wild.  A bogey on one hole doesn't poison the next hole. It seems like every casting game focusing experience leaves us a better and more assured superintendant of our fly rod. Fly rods are just like dogs. They respect authority.

BULLETIN: A new prize money fly casting competition series had it's first tournament in Rexburg Idaho January 22, 2011. The tournament sponsor has a very instructive website FLY CASTING CHAMPIONSHIPS . The URL is http://flycastingchampionships.com.  This site describes a series of  prize money casting contests, with classes defined  by the participants average long cast with a six weight rod and a six  weight floating line. There is an entry fee and part of the entry fee goes into the prize pool. A contestant can enter more than once in the same contest and have more than one chance to s core, thus taking much of the tension out of this casting game, which is patterned after the American Casting Association "Five Weight Game. The Five Weight Game has eight casts to targets, with an obstacle guarding some targets, followed by two long casts for distance. The combined score from accuracy and distance determines the final score.

There was a second be contest in Ogden Utah February 11 - 13, and the scores are posted on  this site at http://www.flycastingforum.net/contest10. These contests will be followed on the Fly Casting Tournament and Contest News pages of  this website, linked below.

Other contests around the country will be announced as arrangements are finalized. The format of the contest circuit resembles the professional golf tournament schedule and prize money from sponsors is in the offing
